Uncultivated Rabbits

Uncultivated Rabbits
Mission

The mission of Uncultivated Rabbits is to facilitate an emergent student voice by creating a nurturing space where students can express and empower themselves through the written and spoken word.

We provide a space for poets, listeners, artists, soon-to-be artists and poets, MC, and the general passer-by to share, generate, and refine their skills of "spit" (the ability to rhyme or place words together that dictate your opinion about your surroundings, publicly) thus, generating a community.

The Rabbits at UCI are determined to bring and encourage a culture of art and poetry to UCI. You can find out more about them at www.clubs.uci.edu/uncultivatedrabbits

Ryan Sin from Relay for Life

Ryan is a fourth year representing Colleges Against Cancer and their event, Relay for Life, is held annually at UC Irvine in Aldritch Park. Ryan is an amazing guy at UC Irvine, so please take this chance to sign up for Relay for Life and meet him in person!
Relay for Life is a 24-hour relay around Aldritch Park where students are asked to join teams and each team is then expected to walk for 24 hours, with alternating members. The Relay represents that Cancer never sleeps, but neither does Cancer awareness. To-day there will be a chance to sign up for this year's Relay for Life on April 24-25 by going to Crescent Bay Room A Student Center 3:30pm-4:30pm. It's a lot of fun!
Also look out for Colleges against Cancer this year, fliering and fundraising on Ring Road! Be on the watch for home-made eggrolls and Cancer Awareness events! Thanks you guys.

January 19, 2010 - Justine Calma

Justine is one of the kindest souls I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. She is passionate in her involvement in Kababayan and ASUCI and has also worked with Gabriella network in their struggle to end the human trafficking of young women across the country. She deeply cares about the people in her community and her commitment to shows through in her work.
Justine is an International Studies and Literary Journalism major; she was last year's Alyansa External Co-Chair and is currently the ASUCI Legislative Council Humanities Representative. She has also studied abroad in Peru and talks about her memories of the beautiful country.
Right now, Justine is working to plan an upcoming conference focusing on "Awareness, Art, and Action" at UC Irvine. Hosted by Kababayan and co-hosted by several different organizations as diverse as Uncultivated Rabbits and the Muslim Student Union, the conference aims to encourage students to realize their dreams and become aware of their world by using art as a medium of expression and conversation. The conference is being headlined by BAMBU, Eye A Sage, and many other prominent artists.

January 12, 2010 - Hui-Ling Malone

Although I had first met Hui-Ling last year, my first opportunity to really get to know her came during the summer '09 UCSA Student Congress held at UC Santa Cruz where we were assigned as roommates. I had never met anyone as aware as Hui-Ling and was impressed by her determination to be a driving force for change in her community. Hui-Ling (better known as "Moo") carries a quiet confidence that has yet to be swayed, even in the most of times.

Hui-Ling Malone is this year's Umbrella Council Chair as well as past chair for the Black Student Union and has been committed to bettering her community, engaging in activities from high school outreach to working as an RA in the Rosa Parks house in Arroyo Vista. Her passion is outreach and I can attest to the sheer amount of time and energy she devotes to this endeavor. Her current goal is to establish a much-needed Outreach and Retention Center on UC Irvine campus.

Hui-Ling has also been a key figure in political campus organization; present at both the UCLA Regents-Meeting and UC Irvine student-protests, Hui-Ling has personally seen both the fight of the students as well as the brutal backlash against protesters by the University. In the interview, we discuss the Open Forum with Chancellor Drake held January 13th, 2010, the day after the interview takes place. Malone has been a key organizer of the forum and attests to the determination of students to be heard on their own campus.

The interview can be downloaded here and will be available to podcast through KUCI shortly:
